Hidden Depths

Play as James as you learn and descend the depths of a mysterious subway station as you try to find and rescue your friend, Jamie. Face your fears as you confront monstrosities beyond comprehension and description. Run, hide, and fight your way through the Hidden Depths of your fears.

This was a project to test my ability of creating an entire level from story concept through blockout and even systems from a single concept image.

 

The greatest challenge for me was maintaining and communicating the horror and dark atmosphere of the level. Since this was meant to be a level blockout and not a fully realized level I needed to work with a small pool of assets but to their utmost effectiveness. I accomplished this with lighting and small soundbites for the various enemies the player would encounter. The gameplay also played a large role in conveying the horror atmosphere, by having the player instantly killed by monsters that would jump out of unconventional areas I was able to communicate simple survival horror mechanics that can later be implemented into my mission structure and in the level design.
